Statistics: Mattilsynet’s restaurant inspections
In 2025, Mattilsynet (the Norwegian Food Safety Authority) carried out 4 765 inspections at 4 044 restaurants. 590 of them (14.6%) had breaches that require follow-up or serious breaches (grades 2–3), and 43 had serious breaches (grade 3).
So far in 2026: 3 695 inspections and 364 restaurants with breaches (data as of 7 Oct 2026).

Method and sources
- Source: Mattilsynet’s open data on smiley inspections (data.norge.no, licence CC BY 4.0), processed by Restoradar and refreshed every morning. Restoradar is not affiliated with Mattilsynet.
- “Breaches” are grade 2 (requires follow-up) and grade 3 (serious) – what Mattilsynet publishes on its smiley site. Minor remarks (grade 1) are not counted.
- Counts are restaurants (places with a smiley result), each counted once per year and requirement. Places that have closed since are included; places removed at their own request are not.
- The county comes from the postcode (Bring’s postcode register) and follows today’s 15 counties.
- Norway has 357 municipalities (Statistics Norway’s classification). The data has restaurants in 351 of them; in the others Mattilsynet has no restaurant with a smiley result.
